Enhancements are only carried out on the selected region. So to select an irregular area, just keep clicking around the target area (with the magic wand tool) with the 'select' option set to 'add', until you've got it all. The 'magic wand' selecting tool works well if combined with the option to 'add' to a selection rather than just make a new selection every time you click.
But you can also duplicate the base photo onto a second layer and make enhancements to that, then adjust its opacity to blend the enhanced layer with the original photo. I used them a lot for overlaying text which can then be dragged around the photo, and for inserting latecomers into group photographs. I eventually made the effort to explore all the features including layers, and it was worth the effort. I've been using PS 5.5 for years and really like it - it's deceptively powerful whilst not over-facing like labyrinthine Photoshop. Just have Picasa running in the background, and a screen shot will invoke Picasa to manage the file (e.g. On the general subject of image handling, one feature of Picasa that I like is the way that it manages "screen shots". It's very good for resizing images to particular dimensions, and one feature I like is that it remembers the last folder that you were using. Handy if you want to pixelate an image for any reason.
I like the way that you can zoom in or out to a remarkable degree, and it shows the individual pixels without trying to optimise them for best viewing. It has "Layers" to facilitate this sort of thing, but they are a little hard to manage, in my experience. There's a text tool for adding place names to scanned maps etc. It has basic brightness/contrast controls, and some histogram-type adjustments. I found PhotoStudio very good for restoring old B&W scanned images there's a very neat cloning tool for patching up spots and other artifacts.

Yes, my 5.5 came with a Canon scanner, but when I went onto Windows 7, I had to upgrade to 6 (for money!!!).ĭefinitely worth a try, before I jump into something more complicated. Has easy file management and resize options. I occasionally use it for photographic images, as it has some useful and very accessible tools. 5.5 for a long time (came with a $100 Canon scanner), and I've used it for simple adjustments to scanned images. So I'll give it a try, I don't have very high demands, and the little that I have done in Photostudio so far has seemed quite simple. Thanks, that is helpful, and it is what I need.

If Photostudio 6 had drifted away from this convention, then I have no idea how to go about it. brightness, contrast, levels, etc) to make changes to the selected area.
But usually, the same controls you use to adjust the overall exposure would be the tools you would use for more selective edits.īroadly speaking you make your selection and then use the exposure tools (i.e. Or try Lightzone or GIMP first, as you suggest.Īs to your specific question, it has been YEARS since I used PhotoStudio.

If PhotoStudio is inadequate, I might get Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements. And if you need something free, either GIMP or Lightzone will have more users better able to help you. I would recommend, that you switch to something more people use. V 5.5 came with a Canon scanner, but I had to pay to upgrade to V 6 for Win 7.

Looking back, it wasn't a bad product, but it never got much respect from the photo community, I think in part, because in the early days of personal computing, it was given away with just about every computer sold, and most of that early 'give away' software was pretty lame, and it was never able to fight its way out of that ghetto. Yes, I knew that it is no longer supported - not really a problem for me.
